Your life matters: The Riviera Nayarit promotes environmental awareness and action

  • Practicing sustainable tourism helps leave a positive footprint in the places we visit by protecting their natural resources.

On June 5th, World Environment Day, the Riviera Nayarit is ready to enter into the “New Normal,” taking the necessary precautions called for by the health emergency caused by COVID-19.

Sierra de Vallejo

Mexico’s Pacific Treasure is rich in flora and fauna.

This date gives us the opportunity to promote environmental awareness and action, and remind travelers of how important it is for their tourism footprint to leave little or no damage in the places they visit.

A key message to keep in mind is the Rivera Nayarit’s biodiversity. Mexico’s Pacific Treasure is rich in flora and fauna, found in the Sierra de Vallejo, the Sierra Madre Occidental, its tropical forests, valleys, and beaches—these are natural resources that must be respected and protected.

Unique experiences

Thus, Marc Murphy, managing director of the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and the Banderas Bay Hotel and Motel Association (AHMBB), invited visitors and locals to get to know the natural areas more in depth and to enjoy them in a sustainable and ecological way.

“It’s important for the Riviera Nayarit to promote respect and care for the environment; we believe that it’s not only about maintaining an attractive tourist destination for travelers, but about taking care of our home, the place where we live, and protecting the resources it provides,”.

In this respect, the Riviera Nayarit has been a forerunner in combining unique experiences in unique places with an emphasis on sustainability.

Travel tips

On this World Environment Day, keep in mind the following ten travel tips and support sustainable tourism in the Riviera Nayarit:

  1. Plan before you travel. Choose providers that offer safety, quality, and environmental awareness guarantees.
  2. Save. Use natural resources such as water and power in moderation.
  3. Be responsible. Try to minimize generating trash as it is a source of pollution of beaches, rivers, and lagoons.
  4. Practice cleanliness. When getting rid of trash, do it appropriately by separating and depositing it where it belongs. For trash to be considered waste it must be separated correctly, whether its organic, inorganic, plastic, glass, sanitary, etc.
  5. Respect the environment. Ensure the only print you leave behind is from your feet.
  6. Take care of the natural heritage. If you visit sensitive ecosystems such as coral reefs, forests, or jungles, learn how to do so in order to cause as little impact as possible and not degrade them. Avoid taking “souvenirs” from nature, such as stones, shells, plants, etc.
  7. Consume local products. When buying gifts and souvenirs, look for products that express local culture. This way you’re helping the economy of the villages you visit.
  8. Buy responsibly. Don’t buy protected flora and fauna, nor products derived from these species (birds, turtles, turtle eggs, etc.); not only is it a crime, but you’ll be contributing to their extinction.
  9. Get involved with the local culture. Enjoy getting to know the local customs, gastronomy, and traditions.
  10. Support sustainable tourism initiatives. This way you’ll contribute to the conservation of the biological richness of our destination and, if you can, participate in local clean-up campaigns.
