Today starts oficially the Whale Watching season in Riviera Nayarit

Oficially humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) watching season starts today. Here are some facts you should know about this distinguished visitors in Mexico’s Pacific Treasure.

1. Both male and female humpback whales vocalize, however only males produce the long, loud, complex “songs” for which the species is famous.

2. Females are usually larger than male, a very rare condition on mammals.

3.  Yubartas, as they are also called, have one of the thickest blubber in relation to their size among rorquals. Only Blue Whales have a thicker blubber in an absolute measure. The thickness of this blubber changes acording to the time of the year, the age and fisiological conditions.

4. Humpback whales are slow swimmers.  During migration they speed up to 7.9 a 15.1 km/h; the fastest speed they have been recorded is 27 km/h.
