Riviera Nayarit hotels collect over 18 thousand cigarette butts during “Cigarette Butt Challenge”
- The goal was to raise awareness about caring for our planet by showing how cigarette waste can be recycled and repurposed.
Over 18 thousand cigarette butts were collected in 58 PET bottles during the 1st AHMBB Riviera Nayarit “Cigarette Butt Challenge” held from November 23-29, 2020.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Bahía de Banderas Hotel and Motel Association (AHMBB), the Riviera Nayarit CVB, and the Riviera Nayarit Sustainability Committee, was part of the “For Better or for Worse” movement that seeks to raise awareness about caring for our planet.
During a ceremony held at the Banderas Bay Trust (FIBBA), the collected cigarette butts were given to the Adiós Colillas PV association that then took them to Ecofilter Mexico to be recycled into paper.
“We thank the hotels that joined this initiative and invite them to continue participating in these ecological activities in pro of the environment, because we want everyone to continue enjoying Riviera Nayarit and its clean beaches,” said Marc Murphy, managing director of the Riviera Nayarit Conventions and Visitors Bureau.
Participating hotels in this 1st AHMBB Riviera Nayarit “Cigarette Butt Challenge” included Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit; Hard Rock Vallarta; Iberostar Playa Mita; Marival Distinct; Marival Emotions; Paradise Village; Samba Vallarta; The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort; and Villa Varadero.

+ Ecofilter works in Mexico producing paper by recycling cigarette butts. The processed material also has thermal and insulating properties, so it can be used to make covers, shoe soles, and thermal and acoustic insulation, among other products.
The Riviera Nayarit is a safe destination. Hotels, restaurants, and tourist establishments are following all the health protocols established by the Federal Government’s Ministry of Health and operating at the allowed capacities. Access to the beaches is limited. Be a responsible tourist: wear your mask and keep your distance.
