2nd Riviera Nayarit Workplace Health And Safety Week

  • This free event from April 17-21 is open to the AHMBB hotel staff and the general public.

The Bahía de Banderas Hotel and Motel Association (AHMBB) and the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) via its Human Resources Committee are hosting the 2nd Riviera Nayarit Workplace Health and Safety Week together with the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) and the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (STPS).

This is a free event mainly for the staff of the Bahía de Banderas’ area hotels, though the invitation is open for the general public to attend the conferences, courses, workshops, sports and youth activities, and educational encounters for parents and children.

The inauguration was held on the grounds of Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta led by José Antonio Ayala, Treasurer for the AHMBB; Odilón Flores, Health Coordinator for the IMSS in Nayarit; and Guadalupe Mendivil, STPS Delegate in Nayarit.

Also present were representatives from the IMSS, the Bahía de Banderas Technological Institute (ITBB), the Bahía de Banderas Technological University (UTBB), the Confederation of Mexican Workers (CTM), the Mexican Workers Regional Confederation (CROM), and the Bahía de Banderas Trust (FIBBA), as well as human resources managers from the different hotel members of the AHMBB.

Work-related risks and repercussions
During his opening explanation of the 2nd Riviera Nayarit Workplace Health and Safety Week, Odilón Flores—on behalf of the IMSS State Delegate, Dora Cecilia Espinoza González—shared some unfortunate stats regarding work risks and their repercussions in the workplace and in places of business.

For example, he stated that according to the International Labor Organization (ILO) there are over 317 million workplace accidents worldwide every year and that every 15 seconds a worker dies from a work-related accident or illness, something neither acceptable nor tolerable.

According to the preliminary data for 2017, there were 5,006 workplace risks in Nayarit, which resulted in 133,808 days of short-term disability.

For his part, José Antonio Ayala, the Treasurer for the Bahía de Banderas Hotel and Motel Association, underlined the importance of the human resource for any business or corporation, hence the importance of this type of formative and preventative activities, such as the Workplace Health and Safety Week.

“What makes this week relevant is its presence,” he said. “You are the basis of our businesses, the purpose behind our efforts. Without you, our guests would have no services, and we would be unable to grow and develop. This is the reason the development of the personnel and human resources is so fundamental.”

Activities program
The activities program included a series of talks related to health and prevention of work-related hazards, for example: The Impact Cost of Work Risks; Work Hypertension, the Silent Killer; Caring for your Mental Health; Stop Self-Medicating; Cancer in Men; as well as other activities including yoga, Zumba, and, as a grand finale, a 5K Fibba race on Saturday, April 21st.

One of the program’s newest additions is the ChiquitIMSS, an innovative strategy directed towards children 3 to 6 years of age, where the kids learn about taking care of their health through play and participatory dynamics. The goal is to create healthy and active lifestyles and habits from a young age.

###
The continual promotion of the Riviera Nayarit both on a national and international level has yielded excellent results, thanks to the efforts not only of the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and the Bahía de Banderas Hotel and Motel Association, but also of the business sector and the communities that work in tandem to offer all our visitors a very pleasant stay. This is possible thanks to the support of the Government of the State of Nayarit via the Tourism Promotion Trust (Fiprotur).
