6th International La Cruz de Huanacaxtle Sport Fishing Tournament
- The tournament takes place from October 31 to November 4, 2018; this year the competition has a prize pool of more than 2 million pesos.
The Tepic Sport Fishing Club recently announced the 6th International La Cruz de Huanacaxtle Sport Fishing Tournament with categories for Sailfish, Marlin, Dorado, and Tuna, to be held from October 31 to November 4, 2018, in the Marina Riviera Nayarit.
Thanks to the relevance this event has for the region in both the sports and tourism segments, the tournament has the full support of the Government of the state of Nayarit via the Ministry of Tourism, as well as that of the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB).
Events like this one consolidate the Riviera Nayarit as one of the favorite destinations of sport fishing fans in Mexico. This is due to the climate and sea conditions, which are always favorable, as well as the abundant diversity of species that inhabit its more than 300 kilometers of coastline.
The tournament’s official presentation was held on Monday, October 29thduring a press conference led by the Nemesio Coastañeda Coppel, Undersecretary of Tourism, accompanied by Francisco Navarrete Buhaya, Managing Director of Sport Fishing Events for the State of Nayarit, on behalf of Miguel Ángel Sierra Quintana, Council President for the Tepic Sport Fishing Club.
Presiding guests at the press conference included Natalia Pulido Alegría, representative for the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA); José Alberto Rodríguez Preciado, head of the Bahía de Banderas Regional Fisheries Research Center, part of the National Fisheries Institute (INAPESCA); Oscar Julián Villareal González, Boat Supervisor for the Port of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle; and Coral Ruezga, representing the sponsors.
The details
The 6th International La Cruz de Huanacaxtle Sport Fishing Tournament 2018 has a prize pool this year of over 2 million pesos in prizes. The goal is to increase the number of registered vessels—in 2017 there were 40—; there are 160 fishermen expected to participate and the revenue for the region is expected to come in at more than 10 million pesos.
The organizers have established four categories for the competition: Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish, and Mahi-Mahi, with four weights within each category. For Mahi-Mahi the minimum weight is 10 kilos; for Sailfish it’s 25 kilos; for Marlin it’s 85 kilos; and for Tuna the minimum weight is 50 kilos.
Registration is still open and those wanting to participate can register through Wednesday October 31st.
The Facts
- Last year the winners were the Texas Tornados with their boat “Animal House” and a Marlin weighing in at 249.800 kilograms.
- The record was a 335-kg Marlin caught by the crew of the “Giallo” during the 1stFishing Tournament held in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle. That year the Sailfish record was established at 52 kg. There is a 100-thousand-peso prize for the boat that breaks the record.
