Riviera Nayarit Hosts Greg Norman Golf Academy Tour

  • The GNGA Copa Vidanta and the ProAm Tournament was held at the Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta complex from March 15-18 with the participation of amateur golfers from Mexico and professionals from several countries.


The Riviera Nayarit will host the final stage of the Greg Norman Golf Academy Tour (GNGA), which will be held at the Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta complex from March 16-18, with the participation of the top 30 professionals ranked during the tour. The ProAm Vidanta Cup will take place previously on Thursday, March 15th, within the framework of the tournament and with the participation of amateur and professional players.

During a press conference the organizers announced the details of this important golf event, which includes a purse of 3 million pesos, with an additional 1 million pesos for the winner of each stage.

Jesús Carmona, President of the Bahía de Banderas Hotel and Motel Association (AHMBB); Marc Murphy, Marc Murphy, director of the Riviera Nayarit CVB and the Bahía de Banderas Hotel and Motel Association (AHMBB); Jesús Torres, Golf Director for Vidanta Nueva Vallarta; Jerome Valentin, Vidanta’s Tournament Director and Miguel Lizárraga, Director of Instruction and Operations.

Amateur players from Mexico and professionals from other countries will join in order to find the best talent. The first day will be dedicated to the ProAm, while the professional tournament will take place during the three subsequent days. The day starts at 11:30 a.m. through 1:00 p.m. at Tee No. 1 on the Greg Norman course.

The top 30 ranking professionals in the Greg Norman Golf Academy Tour, which consisted of 10 phases, with a special mention for Carlos Ortiz and Ken Duke as players sponsored by Grupo Vidanta, will all be present.

On Thursday the starter gun goes off at 1 p.m. Each team is made up of three amateur players and one professional, and the format will be low ball for the three amateurs plus the professional’s score. There will be trophies for the first three places, a new Chevrolet, plus a Club Car golf cart and golf products for the O’Yes.

Jesús Torres, Golf Director for Vidanta Nueva Vallarta, said both the ProAm and the Tournament will be open to the general public, free of charge. “The doors will be open for all the locals as it’s a great opportunity for them to get to know the best players on this golf tour.”

Meanwhile, Jesús Carmona, President of the Bahía de Banderas Hotel and Motel Association (AHMBB), commented on the extraordinary quality of golf in the Riviera Nayarit with an accent on the courses in the region, and that Grupo Vidanta boasts one of the best programs.

Jerome Valentin, Vidanta’s Tournament Director, informed the final stage of the tournament will include the participation of 30 professional golfers, 25 of whom are Mexican, 2 from the United States, 1 from Peru, 1 from Colombia, and 1 from Brazil.


The Lakes course.

Finally, Miguel Lizárraga, Director of Instruction and Operations, presented the new The Lakes course, the third for Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta, a short and charming space with only 10 holes and Par 3, which complements the already formidable golf offerings at the resort.

“A normal round of golf lasts between 4 and 5 hours; The Lakes not only allow the player to walk, but also to finish the game in about 2 hours.”
One of the main characteristics of the course is the possibility of playing nighttime rounds, as it’s open from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
