The Riviera Nayarit welcomes everyone to the 4th Wixárika Commercial and Cultural Expo
- San Pancho will host this traditional event with the participation of Wixaritaris artisans and traditional medicine men; good food and music will also be on tap from November 28 through December 1, 2019.
The dances, crafts, gastronomy, and culture of the native people of Nayarit will be on full display during the 4th Wixárika Commercial and Cultural Expo 2019, to be held in San Francisco, the “Cultural Capital” of the Riviera Nayarit, from November 28 through December 1.
Details of this traditional event were shared during a recent press conference that highlighted its main objective: for the native people to skip the middleman and sell their art directly to the public.
The event is supported by the National Institute of Indigenous People (INPI), represented in Nayarit by Maximino González Salvador, who explained there will be four pavilions at the Expo: Indigenous Paradises, Gastronomy, Agroindustry, and Traditional Medicine. These include 45 stands that will display the wide diversity of Wixárika art, plus other cultural and artistic expressions such as music, dancing, conferences, and, of course, the Marakames (healers or shamans).
Nayarit’s four native groups will be represented at the event: the Huicholes, Coras, Tepehuanos, and Mexicaneros. The artisans will display their beadwork, textiles, and the agroindustrial products generated in the Las Pilas and Cora de Abajo communities from the Tepic municipality, represented by Hermelinda Hernández Romero and Vicenta Díaz Ahumada.
There will also be an extensive cultural program at the Expo with traditional indigenous music, the typical music of the Sierra, theater, and a display of the native people’s traditional clothing.
Doctor Rafael Medina Ávila from the Cultural Promotion office of the INPI Nayarit said that besides being a sort of “window” into the commercialization process of the native people, the event seeks to further a legislative proposal for the strengthening of the mother tongue.
Julio Carrillo Salvador, the traditional Governor from Paso de Álica and a representative of Traditional Medicine Men, extended an open invitation to locals and tourists to visit the Expo and get to know the native people of Nayarit and their great culture up close and personal. They’ll have the opportunity to buy their products, savor their dishes, and immerse themselves in the experience of the four elements: earth, water, air, and fire.
The 4th Wixárika Commercial and Cultural Expo 2019 has the support of the Banderas Bay Hotel and Motel Association, the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Government of the State of Nayarit, and the Municipal Government of Banderas Bay.

The Expo will open its doors to the public on Thursday, November 28 at 10:00 a.m. The opening act will take place from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in San Pancho’s Plaza del Sol.
