The best surf breaks in the Riviera Nayarit

The surfing crowd knows the Riviera Nayarit is paradise central with excellent waves, an awesome climate, and good vibes. Here’s a closer look at the best surf breaks in the area and where to go for a full-on surfing vacation. Some are easy to get to, some will require a walk through the jungle, but we’re sure you’ll fall in love with all of them.

San Pancho
San Francisco, also known as San Pancho, is located just ten minutes past the hippie town of Sayulita, where you’ll find yourself surrounded by surfers. This spot isn’t ideal for beginners, though, and you’ll need your shortboard. After a few great waves, we recommend pausing to try the seven different aguachilesat the Las Palmas restaurant.
La Lancha
La Lancha is by far one of the best surfing beaches in Mexico. It won’t matter if you’ve never even stood on a board or you’re a crack surfer, Punta de Mita’s La Lancha tops the list for vacationers to the Riviera Nayarit. It’s just five minutes from Punta de Mita and to reach it you’ll have to walk for 10 minutes down a path that will take you up close and personal with the local flora and fauna. If it’s the rainy season, you’ll want to be extra careful, as the trail can get very muddy. The surf break is ideal for longboarding, and depending on your experience, you can either surf the middle or at the point.

Punta Burros
The entrance to Punta Burros is next to the Palladium hotel right on the road to Punta de Mita. Once there, it’s a five-minute walk to the beach. This surf break fills up quickly, and it’s not recommended for beginners. You’ll always find good waves, but we say check out the forecast before heading out.

Sayulita
Also known as a mecca for surfing, Sayulita has become the meeting place for travelers from around the world intent on one thing: surfing. Quick note: for optimum surfing conditions make sure you check out the swell on the main beach. This surf break is popular, so if you’re in Sayulita, we recommend checking out the beach at La Lancha after your second day there. It’s 25 minutes away, and you’ll have a chance to ride some different waves during your stay. Also, don’t leave town without taking the iconic pic on the main street under all the colorful paper cutout banners—it’s a must

Stoner Point Break at Playa Las Islitas
Beloved by surfers from around the world, this wave only shows up during the summer months, and even though it looks pretty mellow, it can pack a punch. This surf break is in Matanchén Bay in San Blas and is best for advanced surfers. However, if you’ve never gotten on a surfboard, you can take a few lessons from the best in the area. Don’t leave this surf break without trying out the tasty treats at Las Islitas: their specialties are pescado zarandeado (fresh grilled fish) and banana bread.
These are just some of the more than 15 surf breaks in the Riviera Nayarit area, which stretches from Nuevo Vallarta to San Blas. If you want details on the other surf breaks, check out this link map and keep exploring in your quest for the perfect wave.
