1st Open Water Tournaments In Matanchén Bay

  • There are 15 categories for swimmers ranging from 10 to over 60 years of age with distances of 1km, 3km and 6km.

The 1st edition of the Matanchén Bay Open Water Tournament is ready to take off next Saturday February 25th at the historic port of San Blas. This new event joins the many options already offered by the Riviera Nayarit.

Gital is disseminating the invitation with the full support of the Nayarit Secretary of Tourism, the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Office and certified by the Nayarit Swimmers Association. The Restaurant Mat Bay (previously Etcétera), located at km 3.5 on the San Blas-Tepic highway is hosting the race at the enormous Matanchén Bay.

“The goal is to net 300 participants for this first race,” said organizer Gisel Chaurand. “Right now we have a little more than 100 and from what the organizers and athletes who’ve participated in this type of races before say, it’s a great start. We’re confident that it will grow little by little as have the other sports events in the Riviera Nayarit.”

There are 15 categories in the race, with swimmers ranging from 10 to 60 years old. The distances are 1km, 3 km and 6 km. All the winners of the first three places will take home a medal and a trophy decorated with the traditional Huichol beadwork. Only the three winners of the Elite Race will also take home cash prizes.

The races begin at 8 a.m., so competitors will begin receiving their markings an hour before. The municipal, state and federal authorities are guaranteeing security and basic services.

Registration cost for the remaining open spots is MX$450. For questions and comments please dial 045 (331) 672 8510 or email aguasmatanchen@gmail.com. All the details are also posted on the website: http://aguasabiertasmatanchen.com/
