Riviera Nayarit hosts its 1st Cigarette Butt Drive 2021
- Starting this year, the collection campaign will become permanent to contribute to the destination’s sustainable development. Volunteers collected more than 13,000 cigarette butts in the first two months of the year.
Six of the destination’s hotels participated in the Riviera Nayarit’s 1st Cigarette Butt Drive 2021, an activity that collected more than 13,000 cigarette butts in the first two months of the year, which were sent to the Ecofilter Mexico recycling company.
The initiative, headed by the Banderas Bay Hotel and Motel Association (AHMBB), the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Riviera Nayarit Sustainability Committee, held its first event in November 2020 (Colilla Challenge) with excellent results. Organizers will continue to host the event twice a month beginning this year.
According to data provided by the Riviera Nayarit Sustainability Committee, volunteers collected 13,650 cigarette butts in January and February 2021. This number represents 75% of the first collection, in which they gathered 18,250 cigarette butts.
This program seeks to raise awareness and contribute to waste management by collecting cigarette butts and then recycling them in the collection centers authorized by Ecofilter Mexico, located throughout the country.
Teamwork
The partner hotels’ contribution to this campaign is crucial. They are always willing to work together, contributing to the sustainable development of the destination. On this occasion, six resorts participated in the campaign: Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit, Marival Emotions, Marival Distincts, Villa Varadero, Iberostar Playa Mita, and Occidental Nuevo Vallarta, whose environmental committees worked on the beaches and other recreational areas.
“In the Riviera Nayarit, caring for our beaches is everyone’s job; that’s why we make extraordinary efforts to keep them in optimal conditions. These efforts have paid off, as this tourist destination is currently one of the national leaders in the Clean Beaches program,” said Marc Murphy, managing director of the Riviera Nayarit CVB. “We thank the hotels that joined this initiative and invite them to continue participating in these ecological activities in favor of the environment,” he added.
