Riviera Nayarit: The tourist destination with the lowest crime rate in the nation

  • The area tops the list of the country’s safest tourist destinations according to data from the National System of Public Safety (SNSNSP), a decentralized agency within the Ministry of the Interior.

The Riviera Nayarit continues to position itself as one of the country’s safest tourist destinations, registering in the lowest crime rate per 100 thousand inhabitants in 2019. This, according to data posted by the National System of Public Safety (SNSNSP), and the National Population Commission (CONAPO).

According to the 2019 National Crime Incidence Report (through December 31, 2019), at 379 incidents, Nayarit is in fourth place among the states with the lowest crime rate per 100 thousand inhabitants with a projected population of 1,223,797 inhabitants. The national average is 1,601 crimes committed per 100 thousand inhabitants.

The Rivera Nayarit (which encompasses data from the municipalities of Banderas Bay, Compostela, and San Blas) tops the list of tourist destinations with the lowest crime rate per 100 thousand inhabitants, with 243 incidents at the close of 2019.

This includes the alleged occurrence of crimes recorded in previous inquiries and the investigative files from the District Attorney’s offices (regional) or the Attorney General’s office (federal).

Perception of tourist safety

The destination’s associated hotels in the tourist zone have been able to compete on a national and international level thanks to this safe environment, and the Riviera Nayarit has maintained its position as a destination that meets visitor expectations.

According to the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau’s (CVB) Visitor Profile Study, the Riviera Nayarit received an average score of 9.62 in the “Tourist safety by nationality” section, based on a scale of 1 to 10, with one being the worst and 10 being excellent. In “Tourist safety by location,” the Riviera Nayarit obtained an average score of 9.56, with Nuevo Vallarta at 9.63, Guayabitos at 9.54, and San Blas at 9.51.

These numbers were derived from 8,103 surveys taken between January 1 and December 31, 2019 at hotels, the airport, events, and visitor entertainment and dining locations. The surveys allowed domestic and foreign visitors to rate service and attractions in order to improve the destination’s tourist offer.

“The safety, peace, and tranquility offered by the state of Nayarit and, by extension, our tourist destination, is cause for celebration,” said Jesús Carmona Jiménez, president of the Banderas Bay Hotel and Motel Association (AHMBB) and the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). “We must also recognize the joint efforts made with the Government of the State of Nayarit and the Municipal Government of Banderas Bay. Thanks to this our tourists feel safe and can enjoy their stay in the Riviera Nayarit.”
