La Contaduría (The Counting House)
This is the most important historical building. La Contaduría was built in 1770 on the mount at San Basilio. Its walls enclose hundreds of years of history. Want to learn all about its history? Don José will be happy to share it with you and we know he’ll keep you spellbound with his tales.
La Tovara National Park
This is one of the most impressive natural attractions in the region. Tours along its navigable mangrove canals are the very best way to cozy up to Mother Nature.
The beach at San Blas
This beach boasts more than 40 kms of virgin beach with gentle waves and beautiful palapas to rest under and enjoy the area’s delicious gastronomy. This is a perfect spot to spend a day with the family and get in some surfing (it’s in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest wave in the world.)
The crocodilarium
This community crocodilarium located in La Tovara is a sanctuary for this scaly reptile. Here you’ll be able to observe crocodiles of all shapes and sizes.
The gastronomy
There are plenty of restaurants where you can savor our delicaciess, but we recommend making an obligatory stop at the palapas on the beach at San Blas: here they serve the most delicious pescado zarandeado (grilled fish) and an incredible tropical ceviche.
Local art
In San Blas you’ll find every type of local art, from embroidery to souvenirs from the sea to natural products. Don’t leave without browsing through them and buying something to take home.
Templo de La Marinera (Mariner’s Temple)
This was originally the church of Our Lady of the Rosary back in 1769, but as time went by, nature and war wreaked havoc on the building. Today, Mariner’s Day is celebrated in this ancient architectural gem every October 7th.
Whale shark
San Blas is one of those privileged places where you can see whale sharks. There are area tour operators that offer swims with the whale shark—it’s certainly quite a unique experience.
Banana Bread
Banana bread is San Blas’ iconic dessert. Its main ingredient is cultivated in the region, which is why banana bread has gotten so popular over the years. You’ll probably bump into a beach vendor offering it on the beach—you need to try it!
Palafitos (Stilt houses)
These stilt houses lining the canals in La Tovara were built as part of the movie set for Cabeza de Vaca and have been preserved as a tourist attraction. Visitors to La Tovara never leave without taking a souvenir pic.
Birdwatching
Over 300 migratory birds visit the beautiful port of San Blas every year, which is why the destination keeps making the list of “must-sees” for lovers of birdwatching in Mexico.
