The Riviera Nayarit extends an invitation to the III San Pancho Migratory Birds Festival

  • The event will be held on Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27, 2019 within the framework of World Migratory Bird Day; this year the focus is on the environmental threat caused by plastic pollution.

The San Pancho Center and Observatory for the Study and Conservation of Birds invites the general public to the III San Pancho Migratory Birds Festival to be held Saturday October 26 and Sunday, October 27, 2019, in San Francisco, Banderas Bay, the “Cultural Capital” of the Riviera Nayarit.

As it does every year, the event will include cultural activities, workshops, conferences, and bird watching tours in different spots and along different routes established by the festival organizers. All activities are free of charge.

Biologist Luis Morales-Vallín, managing director of the San Pancho Bird Observatory, said the event is being held during the celebration of the World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD), which this year focuses on the environmental threat caused by plastic pollution. Its slogan this year is “Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution.”

Saturday, October 26

10:00 a.m. | First Informative Forum on Protected Species, Extraction, and Sale of Birds. Entreamigos Community Center, Multipurpose Room. This first stage includes a panel discussion on the importance of knowing the current regulations on the subject with regards to the local citizens, and how to report environmental crime.

4:00 to 7:00 p.m. | Workshops. Several entities will be present including the National Commission on Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), Ocean Connectors, CEMBAB, Entreamigos, and Bahía Unida, plus individual speakers.

Sunday 27

7:00 a.m. | Birdwatching tours. Experienced birdwatching guides will take groups along the different local observation routes. The tours will last approximately four hours.

There will be time set aside for trash pickup during the birdwatching tours. The rubbish will be classified, quantified, and entered into a global database developed by similar events held around the world.

The activities are free, and the invitation is open to the general public.
