Nuevo Vallarta hosted the first ever Informational Workshop To Agree On Management Measures For The Public Use Of The Islas Marietas National Park (PNIM) from September 23-25, 2015; the event seeks to improve the sustainability of this icon of the Riviera Nayarit.
The workshop was organized by the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas (Conanp, by its acronym in Spanish), the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT by its acronym in Spanish) and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa by its acronym in Spanish), with the support of GFA-Biomar.
As a result of their labor they identified proposals for the management of tourism activities in terms of the functional zoning, there were analyses of desired visitation scenarios, carrying capacities and acceptable change limits, as well as management strategies, training and interinstitutional coordination.
The topics included a presentation of the current issues with the PNIM, a presentation of the PNIM’s public use program, management measures and an analysis of the situation along with management proposals for the PNIM.
Other attending authorities included the Tourism Secretariats from Jalisco and Nayarit, the Harbor Masters from Puerto Vallarta, Nuevo Vallarta and La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, the Ecological Agencies from Banderes Bay and Puerto Vallarta, the National Fisheries Institute and the 8th Naval District.
The academic sector was represented by the Centro Universitario de la Costa and the Instituto Tecnológico de Bahía de Banderas. The civil associations included the Fundación Punta de Mita A.C., Pronatura Noreste A.C., Umbali A.C., and the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau.
