RIVIERA NAYARIT: MEXICO’S NEWEST ZONA ROSA
Riviera Nayarit: Mexico’s Newest Zona Rosa
Riviera Nayarit, Mexico, (February 25, 2015) – Riviera Nayarit’s luxurious accommodations, top restaurants and chefs, matchless nature, celebrity appeal and growing number of attractions for cosmopolitan visitors have led Riviera Nayarit to be one of the top tourist destinations in Mexico for members of the LGBT community.
From Punta Mita, a secluded beach oasis known for luxury resorts, to peaceful Mexcaltitán, the birthplace of the Aztec civilization, Riviera Nayarit offers traditional and friendly seaside villages, lush jungles, colonial history and quiet beaches. With an array of gay-friendly hotels, including the Four Seasons Punta Mita and the all-inclusive Hard Rock Hotel in Nuevo Vallarta, bars, restaurants, spas, stores and tourist excursions, LGBT travelers can choose a vacation that best fits their style and mood.
“Riviera Nayarit is a destination that welcomes everyone,” says Richard Zarkin, Public Relations Manager for Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau, who is also gay. “We offer nearly 200 miles of coast lined with luxury hotels, pristine nature and rich and friendly Mexican culture that continues to grow in popularity to the gay communities in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Brazil, Argentina among other European and South American countries.”
Gay-owned establishments include Billy Bob’s bar in the historic port of San Blas, whose surroundings are the prime bird watching spot of the northern hemisphere, and the Xaltemba restaurant gallery in the town of La Peñita. The hippy chic town of Sayulita with its eclectic mix of cultures and surfing attracts the LGBT market year round.
For over 10 years, LGBT tour operators Atlantis and Olivia have been buying out what is today the Hard Rock Hotel in Nuevo Vallarta during the fall, which together bring in more than 1,500 guests from the LGBT segment in the span of up to three weeks.
The Hard Rock Hotel Nuevo Vallarta, Four Seasons Punta Mita and IBEROSTAR Playa Mita offer “symbolic weddings” and honeymoon packages for same-sex couples. Symbolic wedding ceremonies originated with a pre-Columbian ritual in which the couple “was united spiritually through the four elements” before friends and family.
The LGBT market represents an estimated annual growth of 11 percent versus the traditional segments at 3.5 percent according to the International Gay Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA). They also cited this market spends $600 billion dollars a year in tourism. Within the United States—a natural market for the destination—same-sex couples earn 20.4 percent more than conventional couples. In addition, 45 percent of homosexual couples in the United States travel abroad versus 9 percent of heterosexual couples, plus they travel a minimum of four times a year and spend an average of 30 percent more. They are both trendsetters and brand loyal.
