JANUARY 2015
January 2nd– Movie + Picnic, Puerto Vallarta
If the idea of basking in 25 degree heat whilst enjoying delectable food and an engaging film at an open air cinema appeals to you then head to Mexico this January. This unique event, also called ‘Petatecinema’, combines watching a film with a picnic in the lush gardens of ‘El Jardín de la Luna’, situated in the hotel district of Puerto Vallarta.
Beginning at 7pm, the event is suitable for everyone from a couple, to a group of friends or family. Tickets start from just 100 pesos, equivalent to just over £4, which also includes a personalised gourmet basket, lemonade, popcorn and a free mat for every attendee, proving that a night of entertainment with a difference doesn’t have to be costly.
January 9th& 23rd – The South Side Shuffle, Puerto Vallarta
The South Side Shuffle is a perfect example of the thriving community spirit in this part of Mexico. From 6pm to 10pm on two Friday evenings in January a street party brings together local businesses in the Basilio Badillo and Constitución Street area of Puerto Vallarta.
Everyone is welcome to ‘shuffle’ between participating shops, offering everything from fine art to handmade jewellery and join in engaging conversations while soaking up the ambient atmosphere with music and complimentary cocktails along the way. Due to the popularity of the event it is also set to run every other Friday until the end of March 2015.
January 14-18: Sayulita Festival, Riviera Nayarit
Although it may still be a while before the festival season in the UK kicks off, the year-round sunny climate in this part of Mexico means that there is always an outdoor celebration to be enjoyed. The colourful Sayulita Festival brings the laid-back, bohemian town of Sayulita to life in mid January with an exhilarating mix of different activities from across the spectrum of the arts. Well-known music artists are set to perform and filmmakers and directors are lined up to present over 60 international films right on the pristine beach. As well as this the festival also boasts the biggest longboard surf competition ever held in Latin America, with competitors flying in from across the globe.
Gastronomy is also a central part of the festival, with attendees invited to food tasting sessions with renowned chefs and alcohol tasting sessions of wine, beer and of course Mexico’s most famous drink tequila. Most importantly this event is more than just a beach party, as it is for a worthy cause, with all proceeds going towards the establishment of a creative, community space in the area.
January 14-18: International Golf Club Challenge, Riviera Nayarit
Hosted by the luxurious St. Regis Punta Mita Resort, this year’s International Golf Club Challenge will welcome golfers from around the world to challenge themselves in three rounds of golf on its world-renowned courses, designed by golfing legend Jack Nicklaus. Each round has its own distinctive merits, such as the iconic ‘Tail of the Whale’ 19th hole in the first round. True to the reputation of Punta Mita celebrities will be attendance including US Open Champion Corey Pavin, who will be giving exclusive master classes.
However, there’s more than golf to be enjoyed at the event as it opens with a decadent cocktail/dinner evening and closes with a Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony. In between guests will discover the flavours of Mexico by an acclaimed group of Mexico’s top chefs, tequila masters and winemakers, showcasing themselves at the resort’s spectacular restaurants.
