2nd Annual “Who’s Next” Juvenile Surf Tournament
- 82 contestants from Sayulita, San Blas, San Pancho, Bucerías, Punta de Mita and Colima participated in this second annual tournament, where the Sayulita surfers swept the lead.
The second annual “Who’s Next?” Juvenile Surf Tournament took place last weekend in Sayulita, the Riviera Nayarit’s Surfing Capital. This is a free competition strictly for juveniles, created to find the next top surfers on the world stage.
“The idea is to continue to further the talents, the discipline and the qualities of each and every participant,” commented Rodrigo Peña, President of the Sayulita Surf Club. “We want to promote healthy surfing among the kids so they can visualize another lifestyle and have the opportunity to make it their profession.”
The State Government, the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Sayulita Surf Club, along with local sponsors, coordinated this excellent showcase for the newly minted surfing stars and the waves they rode.
“The Riviera Nayarit has been instrumental in helping us with the authorities, to obtain permits and, of course, to obtain the funding, which is key to any event,” added Peña. “It’s great for tourism because every kid comes with his parents; the idea is for this event to grow into an international tournament with the thought of promoting the Riviera Nayarit.”
Besides surfing, the event included workshops on painting, first aid, protecting the environment and turtle conservation, all held in a family atmosphere. There are only two tournaments of this kind registered in Mexico—one in Acapulco and this one in the Riviera Nayarit.
There were a total of 82 competitors from San Blas, San Pancho, Sayulita, Bucerias, Punta de Mita and Colima, divided among three categories: 4 to 8 years, 9 to 13 and up to 18 years of age.
